I hope you had a lovely half-term! This half of the summer term is always so busy with lots of lovely end-of-year events and this year is no exception.

The Summer Fete is the last big fundraising event of the year, and we need you. The Friends of Rodings put so much time and energy into organising these events, and they need your help to make sure they are a success. If you are able to spare an hour of your time to help run a stall or clear up, it would be greatly appreciated.  If you are able to help, please get in contact with one of the Friends' committee members or contact the school office, who will put you in touch with them.

Thank you so much!

Have a lovely weekend!

Mr Raraty

On Monday 19th May the Teaching & Learning Committee convened for the third meeting of the school year, which focuses on the delivery of teaching within the school.

Mrs Oakley joined the governors to provide an update on Science. This year there has been a focus on linking science into other subjects; the children have been undertaking experiments in the forest, and the combination of Science and Design & Technology saw the children creating a steady-hand game. Science Week was a great success which included a variety of interactive activities such as how astronauts train to go into space. The school is collaborating with other schools in the local area to hold joint activities, most recently a photography competition which saw Rodings finish 2nd and the photos displayed in Dunmow Library! The next event has a SEND focus and will be a joint forest school with Great Easton School. Going forward there is to be a review on how Science is assessed, including consideration of approaches that other schools are taking.

Mr Raraty then gave his Headteacher’s update. He commented on how well Year 6 had dealt with the SATs – we hope they’ve been able to rest after what will have been a busy week, and we look forward to hearing the results. We then heard that the pilot of the Breakfast Club has had a positive start, having been run for nearly half a term, and is attended by around 60 pupils per day – a cost review is to take place shortly. Finally, we heard that Rodings is due a peer review soon which will be after half-term, the focus is to be confirmed.

We then discussed the in-school Spring term data, which tracks pupil progress across Reading, Writing and Maths. It was good to see progress across the three areas, with Mr Raraty and Mr Jinkerson discussing the pros and cons of different forms of assessment.

The governing board are looking forward to a Strategy Day to be held in June.

Have a lovely weekend.

Pete Wakeling, Co-opted Governor

This week Singing Squad were busy recording all the songs they've been working on this year. It was a long day for them but they were true professionals. We are so proud of them and can't wait to share all their hard work with you later in the year!

This week at Hedge School, Goslings made fairy moss gardens and Year 2 honed their whittling skills making butter knives.

We also had a go at some of the 30 Days Wild challenges- if you want to have a go at home, go to www.wildlifetrusts.org and search for 30 Days Wild.

We hope you all had a wonderful half term break and are ready for the last half of the Summer Term. We’ve got some exciting things coming up so please do read the Newsletter carefully and keep an eye on WhatsApp messages, emails and Dojo messages, we’ll be sending lots of information over the next week!

The Little Recyclers Thursday 12th June

The Little Recyclers will be collecting on Thursday 12th June. Please bring any bags of unwanted clothes and shoes to school in the morning, the Friends will be at school from 8.30 ready to collect. Please see the poster below for detail of what can and cant be collected.

Summer fete Saturday 14th June 12-4pm

We’ve been really busy planning a spectacular fete for you all. We’re praying for great weather and are really looking forward to a fun day!

We will be sending some message reminders out over the next week but below is an outline of the information you will need:

  • Firstly, we’ve planned some really fun games and stalls for adults and children alike but they cannot run unless we have enough volunteers to run them safely. Therefore, we need your help! If you’re planning to attend the fete please can you consider giving up even just one hour to help on a stall? The more people we have, the less work it is for everyone! The slots we need help with are:
    • Set up - anytime between 9am to 11am: We are particularly looking for Dads! We have several tents, gazebos, tables etc to set up so need some tall strong people!
    • During the event - 12 to 4pm (1, 2 or 4hrs slots): Any help during this time would be great, even if you can only do an hour, especially between 2pm to 4pm. Please tell us the times you can do and we will make sure you can leave on time
    • Clear up - from 4pm: We are looking for those male relatives again! Even if you can only come along at the end of the event, some fresh legs to help those of us that have been there all day, would be amazing.

So let us know if you can help, email: friendsofrodings@gmail.com

A lot of work has gone into organising this event so it really would be a shame if we cannot do everything we have planned due to lack of volunteers!

  • Hopefully you will have all received raffle tickers in your children’s bags, if you have not yet received them or would like some more, please let us know or ask at reception. We’ve managed to get some really exciting prizes for days out, the post below shows all the wonderful prizes on offer. The more tickets you get, the more chance you have of winning!!
  • Next Friday (13th June) will be a non-uniform day at school. In exchange for not wearing uniform can all children bring in the following:
    • Reception – Scones! If the scones are not in a packet please ensure they have a full list of ingredients. No Nuts!
    • Rest of the school (years 1-6) – Any items for the tombola. No used items, only shiny and new please!
  • We will be running our very popular Crockery Smash stall again! If you have any crockery you would like to donate please bring it to school after school on Friday 13th June or bring it along to the stall on the day!
